Sassy’s Top 10 Breakfast Spots in Hong Kong

best breakfasts in hong kong dcg
As an Australian, one of the things that I and many of my fellow Aussie mates miss most in Hong Kong is the range of good quality, yummy breakfasts available – cooked or otherwise! Most weekends across the sunburnt country, you will find people streaming into their local cafés for their ritual weekend brekkie fix, so determined to prove that the ‘Kong does have something to offer in the breakfast stakes, we hit the streets in search of some morning mealtime inspiration. As always, Hong Kong pleasantly surprised and proved that it certainly wasn’t a breakfast barren city – so here’s our roundup of Sassy’s top ten breakfast spots in Hong Kong… time to get feasting!
wagyu hong kong
A firm favourite: Wagyu
There is no doubt that Wagyu is a firm favourite for a hearty feed – and it might just be as close as you’ll get to a true Aussie style breakfast in Hong Kong! With their generous portions clocking in at the very reasonable $100-150 mark, your belly will be well and truly full after tucking into their ultimate fry-up, the Wagyu Big Breakfast. Meanwhile, if you are looking for a slightly healthier option, go for the Wagyu ‘Mega’ Omelette consisting of four eggs (Sassy tip: ask for egg whites!); trust us you will be more than satisfied with four eggs, plus your choice of three fillings (salmon, spinach and mushroom is a good combo). While other Castelo Concepts venues include the likes of other HK faves Wagyu Lounge and Oolaa, we give Wagyu the thumbs up for its light and airy space and its prime Wyndham Street location – a great place for a spot of people watching!

Heaven for breadheads: Café Deadend & Po’s Atelier
Hiding out in a little dead-end of trendy PoHo is the fabulous foodie duo known as Café Deadend and Po’s Atelier. We are delighted to report that Café Deadend is now in full operating mode after a rather slow start (we didn’t quite know what to make of the coffee list originally being printed on a receipt?!), with a breakfast menu served before 12.30pm that includes a simple selection of classic eggs with a twist – think poached eggs and ham drizzled in herb sauce, or five-minute eggs with Cheddar served with a side of ficelle (stringy French bread!) and a tomato salad, all for around $70 per dish. Alternatively, pick up a bag full of yummy baked goodies from Po’s Atelier, who specialise in French-Japanese breads. You will find fresh-out-the-oven morsels such as Oolong fig bread, Bagel Maricot and pain du chocolat, so sit back, relax on the terrace and enjoy your daily carbo fix.

Classified hollywood road hong kong
A classic breakfast: Classified
Classified is something of an old faithful to Hong Kong’s foodies, and it’s no wonder that there are now so many locations spread across the city. Nevertheless, our pick of the bunch is the Sheung Wan site on Hollywood Road, with its outdoor patio and rustic vibe – a leisurely breakfast here is sheer pleasure. On the menu is a range of hot breakfasts, healthy options, and breads and pastries; the only catch is that Classified staff are not allowed to serve food outside, so if you choose the sunny seats, remember to order inside and pick up the food yourself. Top photo also from Classified.

T is for Tea: Teakha
Teakha is one of the latest tiny cafés to pop up on hip Tai Ping Shan Street. Teakha’s specialty is tea – no coffee here, folks – whilst on the heartier brekkie front, there are a range of combos to choose from, such as scrambled eggs with tomato salsa on brioche toast for around $50. One thing to note is Teakha isn’t exactly open in time for the early birds; opening at 11am from Tuesday to Sunday (and make sure you come early to snag a table), so it’s the perfect way to slowly begin your day!

Rava dosa is a very popular South Indian Breakfast which is very easy to prepare. I have already posted rava dosa here, this is another recipe of rava dosa from my mother's kitchen. It is an instant recipe and needs no prior planning. It is very tasty, crispy and instant but you need a little skill to prepare this dosa. I have given you detailed instructions with pictures so that any can prepare rava dosa with ease.Today we will learn how to prepare crispy South Indian rava dosa following this easy recipe with step wise pictures.

Onion Rava Dosa-Instant-Crispy Rava Dosa Recipe

Prep Time : 5 mins (excluding soaking time)
Cook Time : Less than 5 mins per dosa
 Yields: 12-14

   Ingredients needed

   Rice flour - 1 1/2 cup
   Rava - 1/2 cup
   Maida/ all pupose flour - 2 tbsp
   Jeera/cumin seeds - 1 1/2- 2 tsp
Whole black pepper - 1 tsp
Green chilli -1 very finely chopped
   Thick Buttermilk - 1/4 cup
   Onion -1
   Water -appoximately 2 3/4 cup
   Oil for making dosas
   Salt as needed

Preparation

Mix rava in 1/4 cup buttermilk and leave it for 15-30 minutes.

Chop onions and green chillies very finely.

First we will see how to prepare rava dosa batter-

In a bowl, mix together rice flour, all purpose flour, cumin seeds, whole black pepper, green chillies and salt needed. Add the rava + butter milk mix to it. Then add approximately 2 3/4 cup of water to it little at a time and mix it well so that there are no lumps.Check for salt. Add if required.

I photographed the rava dosa batter to show you the consistency of the batter. See how thin it is (picture below). It should be like that. Now the batter is ready.

Now let us see how to make onion rava dosa -

First heat a non stick tawa or a cast iron tawa, sprinkle little onions on top of it. Do not add too much onions as you will have difficulty in removing the dosa from the tawa.

How to make onion rava dosa

When the tawa is heated well, reduce the flame to medium.

Remember for every dosa, you have to mix the batter well, so that the rava will not settle at the bottom. You cannot spread the rava dosa batter like normal dosa.

After mixing it, take a ladle or a small cupful of batter and fill the outer corners of the tawa. (picture-1)

Then the inside of the tawa.(picture -2)

Then fill in big gaps if any (picture-3). See how lacy and beautiful it is. To make it easier to understand, I have explained it in 3 easy steps but you can pour the batter at one go following the same method.

preparing rava dosa

Let the dosa get cooked. Rava dosa will take longer time to get cooked than normal dosa, so do not be in a hurry to flip over the dosa. Drizzle a tsp of oil around the dosa.

Let the dosa get cooked evenly on all sides.(You can adjust or move the tawa if needed)

Wait until the bottom turns nice golden brown and the corners start lifting up slightly.

Once the bottom turns golden brown, flip over to the other side. Drizzle another 1/2 tsp of oil around the dosa. Let the other side also get cooked.

crispy rava dosa

Once cooked, remove from flame and serve hot with coconut chutney, sambar or idli podi.

Some important points to be kept in mind

Mix the batter well every time before making dosa to prevent sedimentation of rava.

Batter should be thin. In case the batter becomes slightly thick after making 3-4 dosas, add 1-2 tbsp of water and mix again. Then continue to make dosas. You will get lacy dosas as in the picture only if the batter is thin.

Once the tawa is heated well, keep the flame in medium through out the process.

Remember rava dosa will take longer time to get cooked.

You can prepare this without onions also.

Once more top shot for you all to enjoy
